Our impact

Twenty-six years of listening, on the record.

The story of a newsroom built one interview at a time — and given, in the end, to the community that made it possible.

Public-interest media is patient work. It rarely trends. It shows up for the ribbon-cuttings and the closings, the founders and the families, the moments that shape a place long before anyone calls them history.

KCED Foundation began in 1999 as a single publication with a simple conviction: that the people building North Jersey deserved to be seen and heard on their own terms. Over the next twenty-six years, that conviction became a body of work — more than three hundred productions and interviews documenting the civic, cultural, and economic life of Bergen and Hudson Counties.

From a publication to a newsroom

What started in print grew into a full production studio — a place where community leaders, artists, founders, and neighbors could tell their stories with the care and craft usually reserved for far larger platforms. The work was never about a single voice. It was about building a record of a region that too often goes uncovered.

“This isn't mine anymore. It's ours — a living record of our community, meant to continue and to grow.”

That is the idea behind the Foundation itself. What was once a private body of work is now entrusted to the community as public-interest media, held in trust — independent, non-commercial, and accountable to the people it serves rather than to advertisers or algorithms.

Why independence matters

Independent, community-rooted media is increasingly rare, and increasingly necessary. KCED Foundation is structured as a New Jersey nonprofit corporation, with its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt application pending, so that the newsroom answers to its mission first. Our commitment is to verified facts, to the dignity of the people we cover, and to a North Jersey story told by the people living it.

What comes next

The next chapter is about reach — extending this work to more of Bergen and Hudson, deepening our archive, and inviting funders and partners to help sustain independent public-interest media for the region. Everything we build stays rooted in the same principle we started with in 1999: show up, listen, and put it on the record.
